Choosing a transcription tool: 10 criteria that matter.

Every vendor page says 99%. Here is what to test instead — with your own audio, on your own deadline.

Quick answer

Choose a transcription and translation tool by testing it on your own recordings against ten criteria: accuracy on your accents and noise, language pairs, long files, speaker labels, privacy and retention, exports, article drafting, social-link support, pricing model and refunds for failures.

5PrivacyAudio retention, deletion, use of your data
6ExportsDOCX, PDF, SRT, Markdown — in the right script
7Article draftingDoes it stop at text, or write the story?
8LinksPaste a public social post — does it work?
9Pricing modelPer seat, per minute or tiers? Predictable on deadline?

How AI Journalist answers

Any spoken language in, 30 output languages out, with the spoken language detected automatically. Up to 2 hours and 1 GB per file. Optional speaker labels and timestamps. Audio deleted after processing. DOCX, PDF, SRT, Markdown and TXT exports. Article drafting in five formats. Public social links. One cent per audio minute, refunded on failures. Test it on your own tape with the free 30 minutes.

Run a fair test

Use the same three clips in every tool: one clean, one noisy, one in your second language. Score them on the same checklist. Choose the tool that costs you the least review time.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a transcription app?

A transcription app stops at text in the language that was spoken. AI Journalist goes the whole way: it detects the language, transcribes, translates meaning-for-meaning into the language you choose, and — on a separate click — writes the news article with headline, lead, quotes and context. You can still use it purely to transcribe.

How long can a recording be?

Up to 2 hours per recording and 1 GB per file. Long recordings are processed in sections and joined back together, so the upload doesn't fail halfway. Large videos are compressed on your own device first, so only a small audio file is uploaded.

What happens to my audio file?

Audio is deleted from the server as soon as the text is produced. Your records keep the text and the article — not the recording.

How much does it cost?

The free trial gives 30 audio minutes over 3 days with no card. After that, membership is $7 a month (₹647 in India) including 100 minutes, then one cent per audio minute from credit that never expires. Failed conversions are refunded automatically.
